Zoot Suite was the name of a mid '80's jazz/funk/fusion band featuring Chris Gumbley on saxophone and keyboards, Robin Jones on guitar, Steve Bolton on drums, and Neil on bass. After initially playing modern fusion standards, the band then went on to write its own tunes. One of these was an idea of Chris's that never reached completion because the band went its separate ways a few years later — Steve to Devon, London and then Bali; Robin to Brighton from Rugby.
Using his 7-string midi bass, Neil decided to finish the piece twenty years later and record it for his solo album, reuniting Chris and Robin (whom he hadn't seen for over ten years) in their original roles. Roy Adams was drafted in to play drums.
The inspiration behind the tune's title, "Hartwell Grover", is a combination of Neil's home address and studio name, and the Grover Washington-esque sax lines featured in the piece.
